And what is in the client's .unison?

I don't see how this follows, but a useful datapoint.

I don't see how an up-to-date unison would break other things.  But you
are on the mailinglist, where it's ok to ask about old code, as long as
you tell us about it...

This points out that you left out most of what you are doing.

Did you try ignoring .unison explicitly?
