This points to the SMB server being at least partially to blame. Can you clarify the following: 1) Does this happen only with Unison, not with other software or with File Explorer? 2) Have you used Unison versions prior to 2.53.3 where you did not see this issue? If the answer to 2) is No, then perhaps you can try some older releases (even 2.52.x series) to see if the issue is a regression in a recent version or not.
