While I agree that auto is perhaps not working as one might expect here, I think you can achieve your goal without nocreation. If I understood your goal correctly, you can simply use the path preferences. You keep your roots the same, and then add a path preference for each current_project. Everything else in either root is ignored, only the specified paths are synced. You can add and remove the path preferences as you go.
