My point is "What is the definition of 'work fine' here?" The syncing that you used to do would continue being done, but that may not be what the what the user wanted or intended. Whatever the scheme is, you have to be able to describe it clearly and unambiguously to the user so the user is never surprised. In the case of "recording the hostname", you have to say "the name of the archive is bound to the hostname which was recorded the first time you ran Unison in your account", as compared to the current system "the name of the archive is bound to what 'hostname' returns". So the particular words you use to describe what you're doing can make things easier or harder for the bulk of the users (who are going to be pretty naive).
