Also (for the benefit of the thread starter) if you enable the "universe" repositories in your apt config, you can get unison 2.53 via apt or whichever apt/deb-based package management tool you prefer in Ubuntu.  If you want the unison GUI (if you're not sure, you probably do), ask the package manager to install "unison-gtk".
