mountpoint parameter

Hello:
I'm not clear on how to use the 'mountpoint' parameter. I have an external USB disk mounted on:
/media/micha/backup

I want to backup my home dir to the directory on the external disk at
/media/micha/backup/home/micha

But I'd like to use the mountpoint option to avoid problems when the external disk is not mounted. I entered into the prf file:

root = /home/micha
root = /media/micha/backup/home/micha
mountpoint = micha

But I get an error:
Fatal error: Path /home/micha/micha is designated as a mountpoint, but points to nothing on host RMS

Note that without the mountpoint line, unison runs fine.
