Im getting the same error after an update -- I thought it was an updated
up2date. But no joy. rhn_register has *not* been updated.

I saw something similar happen when during the update it updated
rhn_register and wiped out my RHNS-CA-CERT file with the Red Hat one.

You might double check that you didn't accidentally update rhn_register
and
now your certificate got overwritten.
