I'm still using 1.05 and was able to avoid the whole issue by
updating the server that current runs on to the most recent
up2date, but I also put up2date and rhn_register in the skip list
of all the client machines.  The clients will continue to use the
older up2date-2.7.61.

I know this will come to bite me later, but 1.05 works great
right now and I have no experience with Apache what-so-ever (we
use aolserver). This leaves out the 1.4 branch for now.
