I got this reply from sun on how we can compile the java VNC viewer
using 1.4 or 1.5 and still have the result run on the old MS JVM or sun
java 1.3 machines...

If this works, we should build the new viewer into the next RC (20?)

Thank you for submitting a bug using our bug submit page.

I see that the issue you re seeing is that if you compile with the newer
1.4.0 and 1.5.0 version you cannot seem to run the applet. This is
mostly because you are trying to run the applet with an old JRE which
was 1.1.8 for Microsoft VM and in possibly using the old Java plugin
from Sun (i.e. versions < 1.4.0). The idea is that if you want people
with older runtimes to be able to view your compiled applet you should
use the "-target" flag. So essentially even if you compile with 1.4.2 or
1.5.0 if you use the "-target 1.3" flag then the resulting Applet and
class files will run on all runtimes which are 1.3 or higher.

Additionally I noticed this:
1) The version I compiled with java 1.4 worked on my Linux box running
Mozzilla, but not on windows.
2) The error I got on windows was similar to "VncViewer.class class not
found"
3) After recompiling using Java 1.3, it worked on both platforms.

STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
CVS download the java viewer from the ultravnc project at
sourceforge.net, compile with javac 1.4 or later, then try to run the
resulting applet in IE. It will fail. Try it on Linux or Sun and it
works. Then compile the same code using javac 1.3. The resulting classes
will work on both platforms.

In other word, javac 1.3 is more portable than javac 1.4 or later?
I thought java was supposed to be getting MORE portable, not less?

EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
EXPECTED -
Expected classes compiled with the newer java compiler to work on all
the platforms that the older version had worked on.
ACTUAL -
Java 1.3 compiled classes worked on all platforms.
Java 1.4 and later did not.

ERROR MESSAGES/STACK TRACES THAT OCCUR :
Class not found???

REPRODUCIBILITY :
This bug can be reproduced always.
