The online documentation for VNC Viewer does not state that "-connect"
should be used to connect to hosts, and never has.

I'm afraid that I don't understand what you are trying to do.  You appear to
be putting a command-line into a .vnc configuration file.  Are you actually
trying to launch a connection from a .vnc configuration file via the
command-line?
