hmm, I'm already using a solid-colour desktop background instead of a
more complex scheme.   It's still taking 20-25 seconds to get that
initial screen loaded.

But wait - when I connect to my Mac from my Windows PC, on the same
home network, the initial screen loads in under 10 seconds, and as I
type this, I can see what I'm typing in real time.   This leads me to
wonder whether my router or my cable internet connection from my
office to my Mac is part of the problem.
