Thanks for the pointers.

To further complicate the issue, this guy

      http://www.if-dev.com/products.html

offers a java-based "configurator" for the AirPort. This app has a 
panel which allows you to change bridging options for the *stock* 
AirPort to have it "Act as a transparent bridge (no NAT)" or "Provide 
Network Address Translation (NAT)".

So the AirPort *can* do bridging without firmware updates?

Help getting to the bottom of this conundrum would be greatly appreciated.
