One of the best methods of finding a rogue access point is to have a party!!
WooHoo!!
A triangulation party that is. A triangulation party is where three people, each
with some sort of signal strength meters, work together and pinpoint the
location of the AP or whatever signal that are tracking.
You could also do it yourself if you take measurements from different locations
and then do some math to pinpoint where the signal is coming from.  If you want
some more details on this method just email me and I can send you some
documentation on it.  You would probably find some on the internet if you
Googled for it also.  Hope this helps.

Do a Google search on "Ham radio" and "foxhunt" for more information.
I've seen some very advanced home-brew RDF designs using Doppler-shift
detection that include computer control and GPS.  Using electronically
(virtually) rotated antenna arrays the signal direction can be viewed on a
circular grid of LEDs.  You pretty much just follow the lit LED until you
arrive at the signal source.  For example http://www.dopsys.com/.  I see
no reason why these types of systems could not be adapted to detect Wi-Fi
sources.  Most the of the systems I've found use the 50 to 1000 MHz range,
I haven't found any specifically tuned for Wi-Fi yet (but I didn't look
very hard either).  Here's another good source
