I've always done in rc.conf.. ifconfig_wi0="inet.. blah.. up".  If you do 
wicontrol -l, does it show any of your clients assoicated?  You might also 
want to try ifconfig wi0 debug and see if its actually generating beacons, 
probe responces, etc.  As usual, use a recent (>1.4.9) station firmware on 
the AP card.
