airport exteme w/ host ap

Last night I tried to connect the new 12" powerbook with an airport 
extreme card to a freesbsd-stable with hostap and was not able to get 
things to work.

The airport control panel sees the network but is not able to 
associate.  No encryption is enabled as this is an open AP.

Has anyone else seen this and tried to debug it?
