I personally would choose an Orinoco driver over an MS Update one anyday.

I agree that the support policy is pretty bad. I was lucky to bypass that
completely when I had to contact them (think they were just putting that
into place; BTW the first levels of support - at least in the US - are
outsourced I believe, but I found them pretty good). Do you have to give
your serial number even if you contact them by e-mail? Have you tried
bypassing level one completely? I know there is one (Dutch) level 4 Orinoco
support engineer that lurks in the alt.internet.wireless NG... Otherwise
why not try contacting Proxim, it could work.

Have you tried completely removing the adapter then re-installing it? Have
you been able to try another unit or another PC (could be the hardware
that's faulty...).

Good luck.

Objet : [ORiNOCO-L] Orinoco USB Gold adapter gets hung on WinXP

I am having a problem with my Orinoco USB adapter running under
Windows XP Pro. I find that from time to time, it just hangs,
and the activity light is on solid. I used to think I had to
reboot to get it back, but I have discovered that I can disable
it and re-enable it from Windows and it will start working again
(although sometimes when it comes back, it claims to have no
signal, but other times it will report that the signal is
excellent when reconnecting, only to report "Very Low" a minute
later (although still 11mbps).

I have the latest firmware and driver installed from the Orinoco
website. I have been unsuccessful in getting the driver on the
Windows Update site to install. I am finding it happens most
often when running Kazaa, but it's rather random. I have not
tried swapping adapters with another machine because I find that
Windows will install a different adapter (even the same model)
as a new device and I'd rather not let Windows learn about yet
another wireless adapter (even though I have only had this one,
my experiences trying to get the WinXP driver to install have me
up to Wireless Adapter #3.

Is anyone else seeing this? I guess I should contact Orinoco but
I don't like their "30 days of free support per device serial
number" policy. Does anyone know if Proxim has a similar policy
(since they bought Orinoco, presumably they will have the same
policies now).

Bill
