Re: Salvaging Unwire Portland

Many moons ago Portland got the nod as a very unwired city indeed, this was
before the city got into things. Here we are now, with more APs in place
around the city by the populace than ever before and with more years to have
tried different things to further this great idea of community networking.

The idea of a low cost device is already here, things like openwrt, ddwrt,
and the like go a long way to being easy to set up and perhaps doable to be
coordinated by a group with an interest in propagating community networking.
This would require manpower, that is more than 4 or 5 volunteers. It also
requires a certain amount of education/ show by doing.

Taint easy McGee and it is going to take a hell of a lot of intergroup help,
freegeek, plug, colleges, scrap, ptas, ... heck even the scooter crowd to do
up mobile mesh points...the take away message here is we really need to
think of what each group does and how that can be used to further this crazy
idea of a city covered with access, education, opportunity and voluntarism.

What i do not want to dwell on is some sort of FONey tiered system or
supposed wireless play wherein two users sitting in the same cafe can not
even see each other on the local net to share vacation snapshots...that just
being a bad neighbor...no cookie.
