Salvaging Unwire Portland

A few notes about old pcs as aps.

They are power hogs when compared to what you can get with something like a
buffalo, linksys, merakis. True they do not have the storage space, but with
things like the usb ports on the netgear 624u this becomes less of a
problem. Following Russell's progress in placing APs out in nodes rather
than pcs I have to say I think the case for APs is made in my mind.

Having said that there are still cases where a pc might make a better fit.
If the location is going to be hosting local content, streaming media,
public storage or other services then it might make more sense to get a
robust enough pc and make it work as ap, host, router, service point, etc
etc.

We have a few old clunkers still left in my garage if anyone wants to work
on them for nodes and/or services at nodes.

This opens up another avenue i think that is left off of the Unwired
Portland solution the city came up with, that of local content and community
services.  Over the years there has been a ton of talk and even some actual
content/services put into play. What could/can we be doing to add value that
people would/could use?
