Fwd: Salvaging Unwire Portland

Fear is the little killer.

Education could be the cure.

Windows users do tend to make up a large percentage of those with valid
concerns about the safety and well being of their computers on a shared
network. Teaching them best practices, showing them tools that would make it
a safer world to share in, maybe even turning a few to the thought that
maybe a better OS is needed...these things might be doable such that a
percentage of those with APs in the field would consider becoming part of
the Real Unwire Portland idea.

Many fears can be dealt with by showing and further by seeing a friend or
neighbor deal with the issues. So it will probably take seeding the
solutions out to a few and fanning the flames of propagation. Spin it along
the lines of "the value of the net increases with use(participation)".

Which brings me back around to a post I send up here a while ago about doing
up a playdate for just such things. I think it might make a good opportunity
to address some of the issues that would slow down the propagation of the
Real Unwire Portland idea as well as work on showing our users, and
potential users, safer ways to use any network regardless of being ours,
theirs or some hazy shady tiered biz model's.

I am going to need help with this though. In order for this to play out with
optimal benifits we need speakers who can show the tools and ideas (things
like janus, use of vpns, ssh, etc etc) and  people to work with other groups
and the press to get the people who need/want this info to the dance. Raise
up those hands.
