Yes, there is likely a fraction of a db of loss in the solder joint,  
and more importantly if you don't get your measurements exactly right,  
it's not going to be tuned to the correct frequency (2.4ghz). With all  
that in mind, all this is doing is creating an omni that has a  
"flatter" horizontal plane, thus focusing power further out  
(increasing horizontal range) while directing power away from the  
vertical plane (decreasing your vertical range).

Basically the same idea as replacing your linksys rubber ducky antenna  
with a 9dbi omni. It's misleading that they call this a "booster"...
