The bottom line for me concerning DIY antennas, DIY most anything
really, is that in doing a few DIY projects of a type you learn a
little of why it may be harder than it seems, may grok why things work
or dont work as you thought, maybe even get a glimpse as to why or why
not pro made gear trumps a DIY effort of that type of item. Fumbling
in the dark often leads to some good insights, though it might just
leads to scraped knuckles.

In this corner of tech and projects though doing stuff like tennas DIY
can be a great start in learning the more subtle arts of the tenna
vodoo, or at the least gain an appreciation for it. And sometimes,
just sometimes (like that cookie cantenna I made years ago) you do
wind up with a nice bit of usable gear.
