Personally I would go the WRT54GS.
I use two of these with the SVEASOFT firmware with mine and the do a great job.
Also since they use iptables you can setup a good firewall.

  I need to do a "parent" network installation.  They currently don't need
  the wireless, but I was thinking about buying the WRT54G instead of a
  dedicated router only (like a BEFSR41 or BEFSR81 - which are very close
  in price to the WRT54G) and disable the wireless for now.

  Is there any reason not to go that route? Seems like 802.11g for $10
  extra is a good deal. All I need is NAT and a decent firewall to put
  in front of their Windows machines.

  BTW - Is it worth buying the WRT54GS over the WRT54G?
