You don't just have to stick with keyspan. The IO Gear adaptors also work under OSX. I've got a pile of usb->serial adaptors that don't work under OSX too, but don't remember which brands they are. I know one is a big Belkin one, and the other is translucent blue like an iMac, but doesn't have any OSX drivers. That just drives me up the wall. If you're going to log into a console at any point, you'll also want a null modem adaptor and a gender changer. I just put a bunch of links for serial on OSX on the MetrixKit wiki page today. For mapping/wardriving/dorking around, I picked up a yellow garmin etrex a few years back, it was a pretty good deal ($100 at REI). It works great if you just need something simple. It does waypoints and all the basic functions that you would want without all the mapping bits in the unit.
