I plan on using the etrex for geocaching also.  Sometimes I go out in
the rain, and my handspring prism/gps card isn't very suitable for
that.

Is the Keyspan adapter you use the dual one (with the round ports)? 
I'm jsut trying to figure out all the parts I need to make it work.
