BTW, Nortel recently demonstrated the use of MIMO-OFDM in which they reported 37 Mbps (peak rates) within a 5 MHz channel. While that is just a demonstration of peak rates, you can already see some of the practical benefits of the use of MIMO in rudimentary 'pre-n' WiFi equipment. These are able to increase effective bandwidths by increasing spectral efficiency and spectrum reuse trhough beam forming/multi-path techniques plus signal processing gains. There are some pre-WiMAX certified systems announced that use MIMO-AAS (adaptive antennas). And a lot more is in the works. 802.16e has basic spectral efficiency of 4.7 bits per hertz. Combined with MIMO, the effective spectral efficiency is multiplied by spectrum reuse - simply if you use the same frequency channels to transmit along different paths in such a way that they don't interfere (space-time coding, polar orientation, vector differentiation and signal processing methods) then you effectively multiply the overall efficiency of the system (bandwidth).
