Thanks for all the suggestions and sorry for not getting back sooner. I have not had time for to play with this project. 

The AP has a few settings. 

Fragmentation threshold: 2346
RTS threshold: 2432
Beacon period:100
DTIM interval:1
Multicast PM buffering: (checked on)
Preamble type:  Long,Short,Both(Set to Long)

Basic rates (Mbit/s): (All checked for 1M, 2M, 5.5M, 11M)
Supported rates (Mbit/s): (All checked for 1M, 2M, 5.5M, 11M)
Transmission rate (Mbits/s): Automatic

What would be the suggested settings for my 9 mile link? 

I also picked up some used RoamAbout Outdoor. 
http://www.enterasys.com/products/wireless/RBTED-xx/

They use the same Orinoco cards, but says it supports 11Mbs with my 24dB antenns for up to 25 miles. 
Does the RoamAbout have some magic that the OR500 does not to get faster speed with the same radios?
