As a non-engineer I appreciate the discussion here, and don't
disagree with a single point Casey or Gary made.  But the
ultimate questions are in the domain of human communication.
Is everybody, today, well informed?  Wouldn't many peoples'
actions and the outcomes they get, be *different* if only they
knew what they needed to know, more precisely, more timely?
Incredibly challenging questions.   Now you tell me the competing/
incompatibility in the US dishes up better stuff faster, etc. and
I can't say you're wrong.  I can't tell you what element of the
stack needs what government regulation. But I can say,
a hellova lot of people need a *hellova* lot better telecoms,
and cheaper.  Personally--I think theres a fundamental rot
in everything telecom today. I see an abstract space with
many instances of communication demand. There are many
different attributes within communication demand.  And
within this space there are "providers"  -organisms whose
DNA are organizing themselves to make profits.  Almost all
of these "providers" imperative is to herd and capture and route.
Where is the provider who sells a competently designed turnkey
ad-hoc routed, general purpose P2P broadband router that can
figure out its peers, more than about 2 hops?  Where the hell is it??
