There is supposed to be a new version of EDGE that improves bandwidth and is 
more symmetrical.  Among competition systems it looks less likely to capture 
momentum.
HSDPA  (High-Speed Down link Packet Access) is the next 3GPP system 
technology expected to deploy 3G-3.5G capabilities.  This is supposed to be 
a software upgrade for UMTS base stations and was hyped as becoming 
available late this year but now looks more likely to be deployed 
significantly starting in the 2nd half of next year.  Beyond that a further 
upgrade called HSUPA  (High-Speed Uplink Packet Access): this is a 3GPP 
revision that will require new handsets as well as base station upgrades, 
making it a more expensive proposition for operators. Both HSDPA and HSUPA 
are 'pure IP' systems with voice traffic being routed via IP protocols even 
though not as open to off-subscription VoIP service.  However, people are 
already able to use VoIP cellphones via software running on certain phones 
and once sufficient bandwidth and low latency IP is provided VoIP can be 
expected to be offered and a shift from voice to rich media to occur.  (but 
certainly not at once in some cases willingly.  Some carriers may block open 
use of VoIP over 3G-4G phones. Of course, Clearwire is said to be blocking 
non-prescribed use of VoIP over their WBB network so that may be a trend - 
if they can get it to stick).  Some speculation is that carriers will jump 
past HSUPA to TD-SCDMA or even further to MC-CDMA which will be a shift to 
the use of OFDM with CDMA coding overlay.  This is expected in 3GPP rev. 7 
(www.3gpp.org).  The development road maps for 3GPP is now being more 
closely aligned to that of WiMAX: use of OFDMA with code routing/division 
optimizations and use of similar error correction schemes (H-ARQ), dynamic 
modulation (although less aggressive than WiMAX/802.16e), dynamic power 
control, and augmentation with MIMO-AAS.  This shift to OFDM based systems 
is expected because of greater ability to take advantage of MIMO-AAS and 
other ways to enhance wireless operation in years (decades) to come.

This used to be the case in the late 1990's, but the United States is
not as far behind as people assume.

The United States has been in pretty much sync with GSM technologies
as of late, and blowing Europe away with other competitive
technologies such as qualcomm's CDMA 2000.

The EU is reluctant to implement any competitive technologies other
than GSM for cellular communication.  A major CDMA2000 effort
(basically launched by carriers AND qualcomm because UMTS was late)
was stomped out in favor of adopting UMTS/WCDMA.  Uncompetitive
practicies in Europe are killing innovation and 3G/4G cellular.  Here,
in the US, the FCC could care less what you used.

The current revision UMTS/WCDMA is barely a 3G technology, much like
1xRTT is today.  Peak upload rates of 64Kbps and downloads of 384Kbps
are specified, but in reality, these speeds are rarely reached.
Upwards of 200Kbps is typically seen.   1xRTT provides symetrical
153Kbps up and down, and typically reaches near the maximum speed in a
lot of markets I have seen.  100Kbps-130Kbps is not uncommon.

I am not going to even mention EDGE, because it is slower than 1xRTT
and a complete disappointment.

Asia has definately a more adoptive culture, so naturally they will
see the first implementations of future standards, but the US follows
closely behind.  Looking that the graphics you cited, most of the
users are 1xRTT anyway.  Same here in the US.  Sprint has had its CDMA
1xRTT service in all markets since 2002.  The one unusual thing about
Sprint is not only do they have some pretty attractive network
offerings, but they have been able to keep their new technology
adoption rates abnormally high.

There are a million different cellular technologies on the horizon,
but unless they are in production and widely used, it simply does not
matter.

People beat up the US for poor cellular coverage and slow technology
rollouts, but lets be honest guys, a lot of these countries are about
the size of one US state.  We have a lot of rough geography to cover
here.
