System profiles could be defined for 802.16d, or .16e  but where is the advantage and money?  Use in the 2.4 or 5.8 GHz spectrums would be limited and congested and not viable market for major operators. WiMAX is not magic in terms of coverage area: it does improve on 802.11 in terms of NLOS and range but faces the same laws of physics at the prescribed spectrum: power levels at unlicensed spectrums are low which purposely limits range to mitigate interference.  3650-3700 is a bit different because it allows higher power levels and controls base stations so there isn't wily-Nelly conflicts.  But that will take about 12-24 months to see WiMAX systems.

There is also activity at 700 MHz licensed and 900 MHz unlicensed.

Some of the most interesting development activity is the development of systems that can operate at sub-thermal noise floor power levels and cognitive radio.  

The fact is that the duty cycle use of all spectrum, including analog broadcast spectrum, is only 14% in the most saturated areas (NYC).  Duty cycle use of spectrum at non-broadcast spectrum averages less than 2%.  

UWB is an attempt to aggregate signal energy that occurs at very low, sub-noise floor levels across a wide spectrum.  But attempts to implement UWB for wide area/Metro networks have shown to be unworkable.  

Some new technologies are developing including wavelet transform and single cycle sub noise floor side-band modulation.  These and other techniques are likely to eventually let the genie out of the bottle to tap a significantly higher portion of the 85%+ of spectrum that goes wasted.

  There is some talk from reliable sources that we are still at least 1 year + from unlicensed fixed WiMAX.   My understanding is that the current 16d specs wont work in unlicensed and we may have to wait for a standard called 16h (yes h) to use fixed WiMAX unlicensed gear.  

  anybody got anymore info on this?
