A few radios by kenwood have the tracker(tiny track type device) built in but they are mainly positioned for ham radio use. As for the receiving end there are numerous sound card interfaces. If you want straight hardware there is a device called a TNC which will decode the tones and trasmitt them to the pc via rs232. Theres more mapping software than you can shake a stick at. I have been able to build aprs trackers for around 200 dollars a piece, including radio, gps and tracker. It stands for automatic position reporting system. It is an amateur radio mode which allows for exactly what you want! The same protocols and software can easily be used on any frequency, so its not strictly for ham radio! The application I'm looking to build is for airborne SAR missions. The goal is to take a low cost GPS deployed in search aircraft, and broadcast coordinates to an airborne digipeater which would then relay the data to the mission base for ATC purposes.
