Ah, thank you so much for pointing me to the lastout - it seems that
is the perfect solution for me!

(BTW, I had already considered that a couple of months ago, but due to
a bug in the scripts I use to transfer requests and fetched files
between machines with and without connection to the net, the lastout
and outgoing indices were incomplete.  As it turns out, the fix is as
simple as adding the single letter `m' to the tar options in one
place.)

Thanks for your reply, the most valuable suggestion to use lastout,
and for this great program (that I have been using constantly since
December 1998, it seems) -
