If I am reading this right you have two machines in 2 seperate subnets. Even if you share RIP routes they will not be able to communicate because they don't have a router to move packets from the two seperate subnets. ie. if you are trying to move packets from an interface in one subnet to a completely seperate subnet on another machine you will 1) have to use a router to move the packets between the seperate subnets or 2) both interfaces will have to be in the same subnet. If both devices are in the same Layer 2 network then it is expected that they will either have a common subnet and simply arp for each other. Otherwise if they are in two seperate subnets then it is expected that there will have to be a router somewhere (even in the same L2 network) to get the packets moving. This is because the way IP works if you are not in the same subnet then you will pass packets for any "remote" network to a IP routing device. If you are trying to practive routing what you need to do is add another NIC to each of the machines. Then recreate your scenario by connecting an interface on each box into the same Layer 2 network and put then in the same subnet. Then run RIP on that interface and test ping the subnets on the other interfaces. eg. 192.168.0.0/24 <----------> Machine1 <----------> 10.1.1.1/30 ===RIP=== 10.1.1.2/30 <----------> Machine2 <----------> 172.16.0.0/16 Because there are no other routers involved the machines have to share a common Layer 3 interface to route packets between your netowrks Hope this helps. --- Richard JB Campbell Securiant, Inc. So , I am just experimenting with zebra. What I have done is connected two desktop machines with Fedora Core 6 as the OS and connected both the machines to the same switch. The machine description are as follows. Machine 1 1. ip : 192.168.0.254 2. mask : 255.255.255.0 3. Gateway: 192.168.0.254 Machine 2 1. ip :172.16.16.1 2. mask :255.255.0.0 3. Gateway : 172.16.16.1 Now using zebra,I configured the interface on machine 1 as the same information as provided below. I did the same with machine 2 with ip shown above After I configured RIP on Machine 1 , and tried the following commands. 1. router rip 2. network 192.168.0.0/32 3. network eth0 4. redistribute connected 5. redistribute kernel 6. write memory On Machine 2, I tried the same commands and advertised the network 172.16.0.0/16 But the problem is that after distributing the routes from both the machine, I am still not able to ping each other . If I do , show ip route on machine 2 , it is as follows Network Next Hop Metric From Time C(i) 172.16.0.0/16 0.0.0.0 1 self It is not showing any RIP routes. Please help me in configuring rip correctly. Send free SMS to your Friends on Mobile from your Yahoo! Messenger.
