"make distcheck", not "make dist". The former will make sure that things actually compile, that no files are left around after a clean, and that all the needed files are included in the distribution. Sure it takes longer (a *lot* longer for most of the software I build), but it's a needed pain when doing a release. Are there any other changes in the new version?
