I wasn't previously using an SSL connection.  If I change the settings to use 
SSL, then I get a connection refused (on port 143).  Whereas without SSL, I 
get prompted for my password, but the login would then fail.

How do you use PINE to connect to a remote server?  I can try that and see if 
it is indeed a Moz problem.
