Re: linux problems, yeah the kernel

so yeah, the power flickered last night and the helmet effectively went
down, again.

so i've the computer booting without burping errors (though the removable
drive with all our back up data and the RH6 install had to be commented
out of /etc/fstab)  but services don't start up.  i've been starting them
manually.

i think i'm going to try re-installing a different 2.4 kernel, but I'm
really not sure what's going wrong.  LILO gives this message:

Warning: '/proc/partitions' does not match '/dev' directory structure.
    Name change: '/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc' -> '/dev/hda'

Which is rumored to be related to devfsd, a package which I installed and
removed with no improvements or changes.  apparetnly it's no big deal that
this message is given.  so i don't really have anything to go on.

Status: unstable in poor weather conditions
