People are organizing legal defense collectives for protesters at the
RNC. I was thinking about going down early to help set up some of the
legal co-ops set up defense offices. Hopefully people will not need to
hire attorneys to represent them because the arrested protesters will
be able to ban together and represent themselves. I know this is a bit
of a scary subject, but the prospect of arrest should not dissuade
people from exercising their first amendment rights. Chances are most
of the arrests will be illegitimate and the police will not be able to
press charges. The legal system counts on people paying fines rather
than contesting their arrest because there are not enough judges and
attorney to try all those cases. So long as people don't buckle and
pay the fines the charges are likely to be dropped.

The other concern is brutality. Use of rubber bullets and tazers by
"peace keeping" officers is a major problem at protests. Non-lethal
force can cause serious and permanent injury. Not to mention general
roughing up.

Sorry if this sounds negative, I just think people should be prepared.
