Furnace Creek is now closed to off-road vehicles due to a lawsuit settlement by the Center, Sierra Club and Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility. But the Bureau of Land Management and Inyo National Forest are considering letting damaging off-road vehicles back in to this riparian jewel. Come experience the outstanding scenery and wildness of Furnace Creek and see for yourself why it is proposed for wilderness. Stands of maple and aspen may be adding natural shades of reds, oranges, and yellows along the way, before we reach the site of the 10,000 acre Coon Creek Fire, where the importance of old growth trees will be clearly demonstrated. A lunch time visit to Reynolds Falls will make this an even 8 mile trip. We'll stop briefly at Workman Falls, too if time allows. Expect a 6AM departure from Phoenix, and a full day of hiking. We will start at the Roger 's Trough Trailhead near 4800 ' and make our way to Reavis Ranch. While both the trailhead and the ranch are at 4,800 ' elevation, this 13.6-mile roundtrip hike does have an accumulated elevation change of 2,000'. The hike is relatively long and strenuous but the incredible views of both mountain ranges make it worth the effort. The views from the peak are excellent. This is a great location to view Tanque Verde Peak and the Douglas Springs route to Mica Mountain.
