CONSCIONABLE VOTES

Recent letters by those urging a vote for third-party candidates make me =
realize
that I have no understanding of the mental processes of those who would v=
ote for
third-party candidates, just as I have no understanding of the mental pro=
cesses
of al Qaeda suicide bombers or of those who plan to vote for George W. Bu=
sh.

What could be the possible difference between voting for a third-party ca=
ndidate
and not voting? You know your candidate has no chance of winning. To say =
that
third-party candidates bring in new voters is therefore irrelevant =97 th=
ird-party
voters have no more impact on the election than those who do not vote.

The question is then whether there is any reason to vote when you are not=
 fond
of either of the major-party candidates. In most cases =97 and certainly =
in this
presidential campaign =97 you have to be very na=EFve or uninformed not t=
o realize
that one candidate will be much closer to your political position than th=
e
other. Those who think there is no difference between the major-party can=
didates
have very little understanding of how our political system works; John Ke=
rry
would appoint very different judges and officials than would Bush, and it=
 is
immensely important to people=92s lives how those judges and officials in=
terpret
and implement the law.

To =93vote your conscience=94 when that vote will be wasted is a selfish =
act that
has the potential to do great harm. If you don=92t understand that life r=
equires
compromises, you don=92t understand life. Focusing on the fact that major=
-party
candidates often hold positions substantially different from yours is use=
less.
It is important to cast an effective vote even if the system doesn=92t wo=
rk the
way you would prefer it to; incremental change in the right direction has=
 huge
impacts on real people. Learn to participate effectively in order to brin=
g about
change.
