has anyone noticed the media war going on?

 - Howard Dean: crucified (apparently, it was his own fault--as if
Bushisms ever get half the air-time of one Deanism).
 - Colin Powell repeatedly warns a congressperson to "not go
there" in a hearing concerning WMD.
 - George Bush failed miserably in his State of the Union.
 - George Bush is put on Meet the Press by his handlers.
 - Tim Russert refuses to maintain any journalisat integrity when
questioning the president ("we are going to take a quick break.").
 - John Kerry photo with Jane Fonda photo on yesterday's Washington Times.
 - The Nation is pushing for John Edwards.
 - And now this Drudge Report on Johon Kerry's infidelities.
 - And Janet Jackson showed her boob.
 - I'm sure there are others (anyone?).

I'd suggest the Democrats need to act like they have spines and be willing
to call the Republicans on all their bull shit. But Democrats will be
Democrats: frustratingly ineffectual. Either because the Democrats will
allow themselves to shift to the right because they notice that's where
all the political power resides in this country. Or because they have
many of the skeletons in their closet (and these bones aren't
infidelities, but war crimes, too) they'd like to throw at the
Republicans. Republicans seem to have a good grasp that the media game is
a life-or-death death game, and have no problems with taking the gloves
off. The Democrats don't need to take their gloves off (yet), but they
should at least stay in the ring.

The volume of divisiveness and conflict in this country (whether over
media, elections or war) these days should hint that now is not the time
for moving to Canada. Of course the comment was made in jest, but I think
the most fun to be had would be to stay and resist any attempts for
disengagement or abstentionism. The time seems ripe for fomenting a
crisis of values in the U.S.
