“Challenges to Women in 2004: A Statewide Meeting on Women’s Issues” will be

Beginning March 5th and extending to March 21st, the Brattleboro Women's
Film Festival will screen nearly two-dozen controversial and provocative
films from around the world that focus on women's lives and women in
filmmaking. Several of the documentaries and feature films represent area
premieres of international releases. Films include "Love and Diane," a bold
documentary that follows a teenage welfare mother and her family over the
course of several years; "Lady Warrior," an inspiring film about physical
endurance featuring a race run by Native American teenagers; and Eve
Ensler's "What I Want My Words To Do To You," which focuses on the healing
power of writing for incarcerated women. A special salute to the late
Kathryn Hepburn includes the films "Adam's Rib" and "Sylvia Scarlet." The
Festival is mounted entirely by volunteers and serves as a major benefit for
the Women's Crisis Center of Windham County, which works to end physical,
sexual and emotional violence against women.

In addition to films, the Festival includes a number of special events:
talks by directors, panel discussions and other guest speakers. Tickets are
$7 for adults and $6 for youth and seniors. Discounted Festival passes may
be pre-purchased at local bookstores and at the Latchis and Hooker-Dunham
theaters on opening night and throughout the Festival. The

"Birds in the Hand: Meeting the Needs of Women Inmates"  A workshop
featuring Lori de Ravello, MPH, Public Health Advisor with the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is being held twice: February 18th,
2004, from 1-4pm, at the Chapel Conference Room in Waterbury and February
19th, 2004, from 1-4pm at the Windsor Correctional Facility

Women inmates have unique medical, mental, and social needs that are very
different from men. For many women, prison will be the first time their
medical, mental, and social issues are addressed. By identifying their
needs, and responding in a gender-appropriate manner, we can have a positive
impact on the women's lives in prison and post-release.  This workshop will
look at how female offenders are different from men, how their needs may be
different, and what we can do to best respond to those needs – while they
are incarcerated, and when they re-enter their communities upon release.
This workshop is intended for Department of Corrections staff, mental health
and health care providers, and educators, but is open (on a first come first
served basis) to anyone who works with women under the Department of
Correction’s supervision.

This workshop is being offered free of charge.  Because space is limited,

4th Annual Estrogen Fest

In honor of fourth successful year, Estrogen Fest is expanding to four days!
Open the festival Thursday, February 19th with Exploring the Lives of Women
in Musical
Theatre.  The event will be held at the Flynn Space and will begin at 8:00.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door and can be purchased at the
Flynn Theatre Box Office.  Following the show, there will be a reception at
the Gallerie @ Opaline. The gallery is currently housing a show featuring
the works of Vermont Women artists. The Estrogen Fest Film Festival will run

Early Childhood Day at the Legislature
Capitol Plaza Hotel and the Vermont State House
March 12th
Parents and the general public are invited to join with early childhood
professionals and Legislators to ask 'How Are the Children?', to express
appreciation to legislators for past and ongoing support, and to celebrate
the day. Registration is from 8:00-9:00 am at the Capitol Plaza Hotel. The
program starts at 9:00 am.

David Lawrence, Jr., former publisher of The Miami Herald and early
childhood advocate, will deliver the keynote speech. Participants will be
able to make connections to other parents and early childhood professionals,
attend workshops, and observe committee meetings and other legislative
activities. Legislators can gain important information on children's issues
and the status of early childhood services.
