Fuel lines will run you $20-30.  Upkeep varies wildly depending on the
quality of the vehicle.  This $22 book gives non-mechanics a way to tell
if one of those old Mercedes are any good, worth 100 times that

Generally speaking VW's break more often but are cheaper to fix.
Mercedes break less but cost more to fix.
