need for Refuse to Be Victim class

Today I recieved a mailer from the schools that the Los ALamos schools have 
a sexual predator problem. I feel outraged as all of you must, and I refuse 
to feel helpless aobut it. While this is a police matter, what can we as a 
club do to make a difference for our children?

Several years ago the Club offered the NRA Refuse To Be A Victim class. I 
had my 2 high school-aged step-daughters attend, as I though it woudl be 
useful to them at UNM (which it has been). Its an excellent program geared 
largely to girls/women,and discusses non-gun personal safety issues. The 
emphasis is on being a hard target, by discouraging, preventing, detecting 
and avoiding attacks before they occur. At the time, I thought it should 
become an annual part of the LAHS curriculum for all girls. Life in Los 
ALamos has been pretty sheltered (or was) compared to the rest of the world, 
and the kids just aren't prepared for what's out there.

This is one of the few NRA courses I'm not (yet) certified to teach, however 
the state has excellent instructors via NMSSA. I woudl like to suggest that 
the Club approach the schools and see if we can sponsor the 4 hr class for 
the High School girls as an assembly. This is a very useful and visibile 
service that may also favorably engage the non-shooting public's attention. 
If the schools aren't interested. the Club should offer the classes instead. 
If the school class does happen, there will likely be mom's who would also 
want take it. Certainly the women and daughters in the Club should be 
interested in the class, and its a good compainion class our CCW course 
offerings for the adults.

I talked to Matt Riggs, Club member and NMSSA President, and he says NMSSA 
would help support this effort. He's looking into possible fund sources and 
knows some instructors.

Any effort at the Club needs someone to spearhead it, if it is to succeed. I 
can get it rolling, but will need some help if this idea is accepted.

I'd like to put this idea onto the Board's Agenda for the October meeting. 
If the Club and its 1000 or so members get behind this, we can make it 
happen and help keep our kids safer.
