verisign pushes their plugin 8-bit .com/.net DNS queries

Verisign finally acknowledges that many people are going to be doing 
UTF-8 DNS queries, but instead of pushing that as the IDN standard, or 
at least making it work so we can migrate to it, they're encouraging 
the exact opposite and pointing people to a server which will advertise 
their IDN plugin for Internet Explorer via HTTP. Wow.
