Do you know of a site where I can > find this issue discussed? Most of the discussions are in the relevant mailing list archives (the archives are all available on the web; check GMANE first). Essentially it's a matter of opinion. If you're an OS purist who thinks everything should be done the way their distribution does it, you'll probably be happier installing those half-assed packages -- that is, until you require support from the mailing lists. Once that happens, you'll find you have a much easier time getting support if you installed the packages from source in the "standard" fashion (that's following DJB's online installation instructions for djbdns, following Dave Sill's "Life with qmail" for daemontools, ucspi-tcp, and qmail).
