Usage of gender in Spanish?

I would forward your idea to the list, as I am not sure how gender 
language is used in Spanish, especially public facing texts.

In German, the generic masculine is still the preferred method for 
public facing texts, while internal documents might differ from that.

I would assume "Estimado/a" is fine.
