Dear Hany, I'd like first to thank and congratulate you for this very powerful GIS engine. I was also waiting for this detailed e-mail from your side that could shed light for the community about your GIS engine. I've searched about GIS and this adds some more clarification that I'd like to share it here with the members. GIS engine is simply a computer based tool that would be used in mapping and data manipulation. The tool should address portability between a wide range of platforms so it could be used in networking applications. Hany had used the most portable open set of tools that could achieve an excellent issue of portability. A very simple example of using GIS is that : Imagine that we are about making a decision of re-locating in a new apartment: The decision is about multiple choices we do have in many different Areas. The decision making will be built from using the GIS engine ??? HOW ... The GIS engine is equipped with a data base for all these geographical areas and their attributes : Other words : It has maps for Heliopolis, Nasrcity, Dokki, Mohandessin, New Cairo , ......etc ... And the attributes could be : Electricity network , water network , waster network , clubs , streets , main squares, malls , groceries, laundries, restaurants, universities, schools, people distributions, urban compounds , ...... etc .. (THESE are each area attributes ). Each one of this attribute is mapped on the AREA geography map as a LAYER. You can mis layers. for instance, I wanna my sons to be joining a school. SO i'll recall from the database the ARea map and overlay the LAYER of schools on it and at the same time i think of transportation means so I'll recall on it the Bus stations around. Then I could make a decision if this school is secure enough for the kids to come back early or it is far away from transportation . All at a glance using the GIS engine. ( Very simple example and so on .. ) You can choose the apartment and its AREA upon collection information from the GIS that could help you in making a decision which is WISE>! Hany, I'm into hardware as you might know .. So, I'll be so interesting in a project like OFOQ when it reaches some advanced stages at its road map to run the GIS on its platform . Having a PDA that could run a Tiny part of the GIS engine could be a fancy application. I'd to invite you to Host the Project under Handasa Arabia Organization and start a mailing list after you get some interested developers and I'm sure that you will have.. and I'm inviting all the members around to share and participate the development of GeoINFO...
