Both sides of the IP for/against argument make a lot of sense I think. The main question for me is - is the enforcement of the Intellectual Property law in question unfairly limiting an essential field of human endeavour OR does it discriminate against those already disadvantaged in some way. For example - IP on certain pharmaceuticals that make it impossible to produce them at a lower cost for a poor country. Terrible for the humanities sake, but beneficial for a handful of IP owners? New ideas for non-combustion engines that are apparently owned by oil companies(if that's true)? That being said, Artists, programmers and so on need to make a living and some guarantee of a payback for their work is essential. The Internet of course has shaken up the IP world and it is scrambling to recover - books, software can be reproduced in electronic form and make it hard for profits to be recouped. Perhaps as some have suggested (Stallman I think?), a global fee to access the Internet and an IP 'free for all' once you have logged on? EG. Everyone pays $20 a month, goes into a global fund which is diveed up according to how many downloads of an authors product occur. Information abundance and authors get paid.
