You have stated only one point of the GPL.  One of the other points is
to let others know who did the work.  This protects the creators rights
of recognition of abilities and also cooperation in a larger project. 
Recognition is also a form of compensation.

it can also be seen that the creator of a particular part of a project
is paying for the use of the rest of it with his part.  This part and
parcel to a barter system.  It is simply a side effect that every body
and his neighbor can also use it.
