If you figure the cost of Windows is fixed and the cost of RHN is annual,
then you're right, it can get more expensive.

However, to RedHat's credit, you can have a single machine subscribed to RHN
via RedHat's demo account.  You'll be required to fill out surveys
periodically, but if running Linux is your goal, this is a small price to
pay.

I've just been told that paying for RHN gets as expensive as buying
Windows and using Windows Update.
Is that true??

Even if that were true, (which i doubt) you don't *need* to use RHN. It's
very convenient if you do, but you can just download the packages from
updates.redhat.com (or a mirror), put all the ones you need on a CD and use
'rpm --freshsen *.rpm' if you don't want to pay.
It follows the rest of RH- Pay for extra service, but you *can* do it all
for free if you make the effort.
