I previously made recommendations for MySQL and Python and/or Perl
based on the same idea: cross-platform.  So that seems to be the theme
for most of the replies.  

I figure by now, most of the folks taking a class like this aren't
going to be too challenged by a web browser or e-mail program.  Then
again, if you get into all the fancy extensions you can add to
Mozilla/Firebird/Thunderbird, it could be a lot of fun.
